CORNER BROOK - A national conference aimed at drawing attention to conservation and stewardship issues will be held in western Newfoundland this summer.
Valuing Nature: Stewardship and Conservation in Canada 2006 will be held in Corner Brook, Newfoundland July 5-8 2006 at the Pepsi Centre and Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. Held every three years, Stewardship and Conservation in Canada is a national conference that has been attracting participants from a wide variety of backgrounds, including all levels of government, non-profit organizations, industry and Aboriginal groups from across Canada and beyond.
“The conference will provide participants with an opportunity to network with a broad cross-section of stewards, practitioners and other professionals,” explains Tom Humphrey, co-chair of the national event. “It also provides the opportunity to share information to further stewardship and conservation in Canada.”
Building on successful conferences held in Victoria, British Columbia, in 2003, and in Guelph, Ontario, in 2000, Valuing Nature: Stewardship and Conservation in Canada 2006 will chart and evaluate progress, as well as contribute to the evolution and implementation of the 10-year action plan conceived at Victoria.
Over the course of the three days, delegates will take part in themed sessions chaired by various sectors, including all levels of government, Aboriginals and youth. Themes for this year’s conference include:
- Stewardship Economics and Sustainability: Addressing the question when nature pays, who pays for nature?
- Stewardship’s Web of Conservation Lands/Waters in Canada: Reflecting critically on the role stewardship plays in protecting our precious natural heritage.
- Headwaters to Oceans: Explores managing our natural capital based on watersheds, land and seascapes.
- Funding Strategies and Financial Instruments for Stewardship: Addresses long-term funding for stewardship programs and changing the rules in support of conservation.
- Community-Based Monitoring for Stewardship: Explores the role of citizen science, traditional and local knowledge in conservation decision-making.
In addition to the sessions, there will also be a series of pre-conference and post-conference tours that will bring delegates to a variety of communities along the west coast and Northern Peninsula, including Rocky Harbour, Port au Choix, Main Brook and St. Anthony.
Valuing Nature: Stewardship and Conservation in Canada 2006 is co-hosted by the Newfoundland and Labrador Legacy Nature Trust and the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Environment and Conservation, and will include a poster exhibit, silent auction, Speaker’s Corner, Newfoundland and Labrador feature, as well as closing ceremonies.
